DIY Decor: A Fun Chalkboard Door (with a shelf!)

This weekend I had time to work on a ton of DIY decor projects that have been sitting in my poor little shed for way too long! My first victim: my friend Jodi gave me this awesome old wood door!

When I got it, I knew I wanted to make something similar to this vintage door shelf and this door bookshelf.

Fast forward to January when I asked for your advice on my dining room and kitchen design. Do you remember this blank wall in our hallway?

I finally found the perfect solution!

One part was already punched out, so that's where I decided to make the shelf. Yes, the door is upside down, but it wouldn't make sense to have a shelf at the bottom of the door. I just went with it.

I used my jigsaw (I feel so cool saying that) and cut off the remaining part of the opening:

At this point, I simply sanded any rough edges. I might paint the door a bright color in the future, but for now, I like the tan.

I taped off each remaining section of the door with painter's tape and paper bags. Make sure your paper bags are taped down correctly-- the chalkboard paint will give you some over-spray.

Chalkboard paint it! Follow the directions on your chalkboard paint as far as cure time goes. Most products require you to wait 24 hours before you write on the chalkboard. Trust their word, people! I've skipped this step before and ruined a project-- it's no bueno. After the 24 hours, completely cover the surface with chalk before writing anything specific.

For the shelf of the door, I grabbed a piece of wood out of my hoard stash. It was a craft board that I bought at Home Depot for less than $2.00. I measured the width of the space and the wood board was about an inch too long-- another excuse to use my jigsaw! I cut an inch off and it was the perfect length. It fit so well, that I haven't even screwed it onto the door yet. Eventually, I will add some L brackets below the shelf to keep it secure, but I was too impatient to show you guys this project!

Here's the finished product on the other side of the house (where the lighting is much better):

(I even left Venti a little message at the bottom, considering she'll be the only one seeing it the most)

And here it is in it's official spot (where the lighting is the worst):

I'm super happy with it and I love all of the character it has! Now we have a spot for our grocery list, fun notes, lovely quotes, etc!

What do you think!?
