Jewelry Storage Ideas from My Bedroom

Hey guys! Like I said on Facebook, life has been crazy! Sorry I keep disappearing! I wanted to share some of the storage solutions I have in my bedroom. Not all of these are my original ideas, but are still cool nevertheless. Let's face it, most of my closet is full of craft supplies, so I had to figure out a way to put my jewelry throughout my room without it looking cluttered. Here's what I came up with:

1. My aunt and mom bought me this at a garage sale. I'm not sure what it was used for before, but it looks like it's a mini-gate or something. I put all of my hanging earrings and my favorite necklaces here.

2. We've all seen the candle-stick with the plate idea on Pinterest, but I remember when I first saw it on Pure and Noble. I got an old plate and a chippy candlestick from a thrift store and hot glued them together-- so easy and totally goes with my vintage style! I put my watch and my favorite bracelets here. Next to the plate stand, I have an item that I got at a garage sale. I think it was originally a picture holder, but I put my pearl necklaces on them. Again, such an easy thing and looks very vintage.

 3. I found this adorable candle stick at a garage sale. I knew I would never use it for candles (I'm not a huge fan of tall candlesticks), but I had another idea-- a place for my rings! It sits on my nightstand next to my vintage lamp!

4. This is kind of a given-- but I also have a jewelry tree that my mom got me for Christmas a few years ago. I put my earring studs in the bottom part and hung my graduation tassel and an ornament that my awesome friend Erin got for me in Amsterdam. Like I said in my Bedroom Reveal post, use items that mean a lot to you in your room (like a Christmas ornament). It might not make sense to have a Christmas ornament out, but it adds character and color!

What do you guys think? How do you store your jewelry? I want to see your ideas so send me some links-- I promise I'll check them out! :)

Bedroom on a Budget: My Bedroom Reveal!

Warning: This is an incredibly long post. I feel like each piece in my room tells a story.. and no matter how hard I try, I can't cut things out.  I won't be offended if you just want to scan over the pictures :)

It's time, it's time! As promised, here is my bedroom reveal! This room was truly on a budget. Not a "I'm on a budget, I only spent $1,000" but a "I'm on a budget, the most expensive item in this room are my mattresses at $75" kind of budget. You can still be on a budget and make it look like awesome. But, I'll let you be the judge :)
Here's what you see when you open the door to my room:

As my roommate (the one in the doggy door) says, it's "grandma chic"... and I think I like that. I had big plans in my Design Advice post-- I wanted to paint the walls grey and my comforter was going to be gray with a big print on it. However, once I started unpacking and looked over everything I had, I realized I wanted to go in a different direction. The walls were already a tan/brown so I left them like that (aka no money had to be spent on paint!). Plus, I had two brown furniture pieces, so it made more sense.

The week before we moved in, I painted my $20 thrift store bed an aqua/teal blue. If you want to see the before and after, click here. The same week we moved in was my birthday, so my mom got me this adorable creme quilt for my bed for $40 at TjMaxx! It has a hint of a pattern on it, which is perfect.
At the end of my bed, I have my quilt that I bought in Thailand for 1,000 baht (about 35 US dollars). It's hand-sewn and so gorgeous.

Next to my bed, you will find a cute side table that my cousin gave to me!

 1. My mom got these at a yard sale for $2. I love how they tie in my mustard yellow chair (picture below).

2. I got this lamp at a yard sale and did a makeover on it for a total of $10. If you want to see the before and after, check it out here.

3. I have a ton of books from college and some that I buy from yard sales because they're pretty. They're a great way to add color to a room.. plus, they make you look smart, right?

Besides my bed, the first thing you notice when you walk in my room is my frame wall. It's completely comprised of frames that were either given to me or were found at garage sales. The most expensive frame was probably $2.

After that, your eye would probably go to my crazyawesomecool mustard yellow chair. I got it for free from a thrift store! In it's lap is a gorgeous pillow from Goodwill that was $3.

Next to the chair is my desk:

1. This is where all the bloggy goodness happens (for the most part, at least).  I got this piece from my mom for free! Before that, she bought it at a yard sale for $5.. it's in the blood, people. It's definitely a piece I have to redo, though. It came from her classroom and it has stamps on it, glitter, etc. I'm sure a desk redo post will be in the future :)
What should I do with it? Leave your advice in the comment section below!

2. In general, I love to include personalized items in my home. Duh, right? Particularly if you're on a budget, though, take out those pictures that your children drew for you, or that encouraging card that someone sent you-- they add color and personality to your room and they're freeeeee. For me, it's a card that a student made me at a camp the band played at, and a crayon art work that one of the students at the church I work at made me. They both make my heart happy!

Other random things I love from my desk:
My cousin drew that picture a few years ago when I was struggling with what I should do with my life and said "Look BoBo, it's you playing guitar." I felt like he whole-heartedly believed in me and my music. That same week someone gave me that quote.. I cut them out and put them together in my frame. I'm still trying to make that quote a reality :)

As for my desk chair, I got it for $15 at a yard sale:

On the other side of my bed you will find my dresser:

1. I've had this dresser since I was 8 years old. I almost sold it until I saw the exact same dresser in this post from The Turquoise Iris. I might paint it eventually and change the knobs, but for now, it works. If I paint it, what color should I paint it?

2. Again, books are awesome to decorate with. Two of the three pictured are old poetry books from Lord Byron and Robert Browning and I almost squealed when I found them at a yard sale for 50 cents each... I probably just sounded like a nerd. The cute little bird is from Goodwill for a whopping 75 cents.

3. Another obvious thing -- add lots of pictures! It personalizes the room and makes it feel home-y.

I think that's it for now! I still need some things like curtains, but I'm basically done. Check back next week for a post on how I store my jewelry around my room! I'm sorry this was such a long and detailed post, but I just couldn't help myself! This room has been in the making for over a year while I lived with my friend's family. I am just so thankful that God worked everything out when He did. This house is truly a blessing!

Before & After: My Bed

Hello! Are you all sick of hearing about my new house/room? I hope not! My mom found this adorable bed for me for $20 from a local thrift store in Florida. Here's the before:

Don't you just love it's curves? As I wrote in my Design Advice post, I wanted my bed to be a focal point in my room. So, I painted it teal!

(Side note: The first after picture shows the true color of the bed.)

What do you guys think? Are you ready to see the full room reveal? Check back on Thursday and it will be here!

The full room reveal is now up. Check it out here!

Music Monday #3

Well, I created Music Monday and then.. I bailed. Sorry about that! Here's a video that has been so amazing for this heart of mine. Read the words as you listen and let them sink in.

"Sovereign Over Us" by Aaron Keyes

There is strength within the sorrow, there is beauty in our tears
You meet us in our mourning, with a love that casts out fear
You are working in our waiting, sanctifying us
When beyond our understanding, You're teaching us to trust

Your plans are still to prosper, You have not forgotten us
You're with us in the fire and the flood
Faithful forever, perfect in love
You are sovereign over us

You are wisdom unimagined, who could understand Your ways
Reigning high above the heavens, reaching down in endless grace
You're the lifter of the lowly, compassionate and kind
You surround and You uphold me, Your promises are my delight

Even what the enemy means for evil
You turn it for our good, You turn it for our good and for Your glory
Even in the valley You are faithful
You're working for our good, You're working for our good and for Your glory

Bedroom Lamp Redo!

A long, long time ago, I bought this hideous lamp at a yard sale. I'm frustrated with myself because I lost the true before picture. Imagine it without all the tape and add on a hugeeeeee lamp shade. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy for buying it, including the man that sold it to me. Nevertheless, it had some amazing details so I went for it. It sat in my closet for a long time until we finally moved a few weeks ago!

How I Did It:
I taped off the white bulb part in the middle of the lamp (pictured above) and I took off the little crystals that hung from the middle of the lamp. I also took off the pieces that hold on the lamp shade like so:

Then, I spray painted the entire thing with Satin Lagoon from Rust-Oleum. I'm not an expert at spray painting, but I always try to do multiple thin coats so I don't get a lot of runs on the piece.

Total Spent -- around $10
Lamp -- I believe it was $3
Spray Paint -- $4
Lamp Shade -- $3 at Kirklands (score!)

Now, the lamp sits in my new room! What do you guys think?

With the lights on:

Isn't it adorable now? When you go to thrift stores or garage sales, remember to look past your first impression of an item. Visualize it in a modern way like I did-- with a bright paint color, new lamp shade, etc. You end up creating a one-of-a-kind piece for your room for less!
Check back in a few days for my bed makeover and the full room reveal!

The full room reveal is now up. Check it out here
